Heating Method: Why Utilities Come First
One of the most common and costly mistakes we see? Falling in love with a heating method before confirming the utilities can support it.
We have worked with clients who had their hearts set on a steam-heated brewhouse and hot liquor tank, only to discover they had no gas line into the building and insufficient power for an electric steam boiler. Utility upgrades are expensive, slow, and often disruptive to a project timeline.
Before any equipment decisions are finalized, we get a clear picture of what utilities are available. We also position equipment in relation to those utility sources to minimize process piping and cabling runs. Running utilities around a brewery adds cost and complexity that is entirely avoidable with good planning.
The Layout Process: A High-Stakes Game of Tetris
Once we have the full picture, we get into the layout itself. Think of it as a very high-stakes game of Tetris.
Our starting point is always a 2D CAD drawing of the space, sourced from your designer, architect, or landlord. Accuracy here is non-negotiable. If we are working from an incorrect drawing, even small discrepancies can cause major problems on installation day.
We also ask that any updates to the space plan be shared with us promptly. Equipment gets copied into the latest version of the layout so there are no surprises when delivery day arrives.
Why Millimeter-Level Accuracy Matters
Brewery layout design is not a “close enough” discipline.
Structural load. All weight calculations must use wet weights, not dry. Underestimating load can cause foundation cracking or structural failure, particularly near trench drains.
Drainage placement. Trench drains can compromise slab integrity if placed under heavy loads. They can also reduce height clearances if they need to be added on top of the slab. Both factors need to be accounted for from the start.
Equipment fit. If a vessel does not fit through the door or into the designated space on unloading day, the entire layout is thrown off. That is a domino effect no one wants to deal with.

Process flow. We design the layout to follow the natural sequence of the brewing process. Redundant movements waste time, and time is money. A well-designed process path reduces unnecessary steps for your team every single brew day.
Utility routing. Piping routes, power outlet locations, and access points for glycol inlets and outlets are all factored into the layout. Our 3D modeling capability also allows us to design a majority of the brewhouse process piping before equipment even ships.
Room for expansion. Planning for future growth from the start is far cheaper than retrofitting later. We identify where additional vessels or equipment could be added and design utility routing to support that from day one.

Is the brite tank positioned near the cold room? Is the lauter tun close enough to the door for easy malt in and kegs out? These details seem small in isolation.
